Le Bella Desgagnés is equipped with an enclosed section with cages for transporting pets. This kennel, located on deck 3, is heated and air-conditioned for your pets’ comfort.
What you need to know
- We have 8 cages, including 4 larger ones for bigger, heavier dogs. It’s best to reserve a spot, as space is limited.
- During your pet’s stay, you are responsible for feeding and watering your pet. You are also responsible for cleaning the crate when you arrive at your destination. On-site cleaning products are provided for easy cleaning of the cage. A watering can is also provided to thoroughly hose down the cage.
- During transport, you can visit your pet regularly to keep it company, but you won’t be able to walk around the ship with it, or bring it to your cabin.
- You can take your pet out for a walk and relieve it at any of the ports of call, except at Port-Menier. As a protected area, pets are strictly forbidden.
- Dogs, cats and birds are the animals most often transported on board. The cost is $25 for the use of a cage. If you have two small dogs, for example, you can place them in the same cage and pay the $25 fee only once.
- Transporting an animal over a long distance is not ideal. For example, it’s unthinkable for a forfeiter to make the entire Rimouski/Blanc-Sablon/Rimouski trip with an animal.
Emotional support animals
It is not permitted to travel on Le Bella Desgagnés with a dog or cat acting as an emotional support animal. Pets must be placed in a kennel cage provided for this purpose. For the record, emotional support dogs are not recognized by law in Canada, and therefore companies are not required to give them access to public places. The law makes an important distinction between a service dog and an emotional support dog.
Service dogs
If you wish to travel with your dog as an assistance dog or service dog, you must have a certificate issued by an organization or person specializing in training assistance dogs to meet the following needs :
- Guiding a visually impaired person
- Alerting a person with a hearing impairment to the presence of other people or sounds, such as an alarm or telephone bell
- Pulling a wheelchair
- Recognizing and alerting to certain changes that may indicate an epileptic seizure
- Helping someone suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
We recognize the right to use a service dog, so they will be accepted anywhere on the ship. You remain responsible for your animal, its cleanliness and any damage that may result from its use on the ship.
What about larger animals?
- To transport a larger animal, such as a horse or cow, you must contact our cargo service: 1-800-463-0680, ext. 4221.
